The Regrets

I’m so sorry I lost the photos of your grandfather in The Keys. I think about him often and the muggy night we spent on the second floor of his hardware shop in South Trinidad. He taught us love, strength. In the war of hearts he taught us to persevere. We drank colas as mosquitoes tried to claw their way through the screens. He shared stories of a hard life lived, and ate every last scrap of chicken off of the legs he grilled over an open fire.

His acceptance of our forbidden love taught the greatest lesson of all; sometimes you find support and an open mind not from the youngest generation, but from the one that is full of regret from not taking their own chances.
